Working with Winter White

White winter coat, cream sweater, white trousers and pale pointed boots

Winter white works best as a family of related shades. A cream knit, a pale coat, and white trousers do not need to be identical. Their small differences make the outfit feel softer and give the eye somewhere to settle.

Start with the practical base: a comfortable knit and trousers that suit the shoes you will wear. Add a coat with enough room for the sleeves beneath it. A longer outer layer creates a continuous line, especially when the shoes stay close to the same color.

Texture supplies the definition that a strong color contrast might otherwise provide. Brushed wool, ribbed knitwear, and smooth leather each reflect light differently. Keep the accessories edited so the variation in the fabrics remains visible.

Pale clothing asks for a little planning rather than special treatment. Check care labels, the weather, and the surfaces you expect to sit on. The point is to enjoy a lighter palette in colder months, with pieces that still fit the day you have ahead.
